ACT vs. SAT
Both the ACT and SAT are widely accepted by colleges and universities across the United States.
However, the two test differ in format, content, and testing experience. Understanding these differences can help determine which test aligns best with your student's strengths!
ACT OVERVIEW
The ACT has three sections: English, math, and reading, with an optional essay and science section. The composite score only consists of the English, math, and reading sections. The science section, if taken, will be scored separately on a scale from 1 to 36. In addition, the essay is scored separate from the composite score. The ACT is available in both paper and online at designated testing centers.
SAT OVERVIEW
As of March 2024, the SAT is only given online at testing centers. The test consists of three sections: reading, writing and math. The math section is divided into two modules, with the second module adapting in difficulty based on the student's performance in the first. The SAT math section includes both multiple-choice and written response questions.
Which Test Should Your Student Take?
The choice between the ACT and SAT depends on your student's test taking preferences and academic strengths. If your student is more comfortable with paper based tests and prefers multiple-choice questions, the ACT may be more suitable. However, if your student is better equipped at taking test online and open-ended questions, then the SAT could be a better fit.
Students who excel in math reasoning and can navigate open-ended questions may find the SAT aligns with their skills, while those who prefer straightforward problem-solving might favor the ACT.
